The New York Times is reporting that while smart phones in prison can be lethal devices that are used to organize inside riots or orchestrate crimes on the outside, they are also being used for leisure activities such as playing FarmVille! Smart phones provide internet access which allow all sorts of communication with the outside world. The incarcerated equipped with smart phones can have access to Facebook accounts, email capabilities and text messaging, not to mention their own piece of virtual land and livestock in FarmVille.
Smuggled cell phones most often enter the prison by guards or other employees, visitors, or incoming prisoners and usually come with a hefty price tag, “ranging from $300 to $1,000, depending on the type of phone and the service plan. Monthly fees are generally paid by inmates’ relatives”. Most recently, notorious criminal Charles Manson was caught just a few weeks ago hiding a cell phone under his prison mattress.
It’s easy for anyone to get addicted to using their phones or playing FarmVille, but can you imagine if you had nothing else to do and all the time in the world to devote to tending your FarmVille crops? Farming for prisoners is not only fun, it helps pass the time in days filled with boredom. However, farming from your cell comes with a huge risk- since President Obama passed legislation back in August 2010 making possession of illegal cell phones a crime punishable with up to one extra year in prison.
